Where's all the food?
Access to healthy and affordable food should be something all American have. Unfortunately, in Milwaukee many factors have led to the creation of communities saturated with fast food establishments and grocery stores full of alcohol and snack foods. This environment has led to high rates of childhood obesity that will burden kids with health problems and lead to unhealthy and malnourished generations. However, urban agriculture and other grassroot movements in Milwaukee are working towards healthier communities by providing them with fresh produce. In 2008, the North side community successfully warded off a Church's Chicken, http://www.jsonline.com/business/35871844.html . Urban agriculture programs such as Growing Power and Sweet Water Organics also help provide healthy food to urban communities. Federal powers have also taken note with Michelle Obama starting a "let's move" campaign that is helping bring attention to the problem of childhood obesity. With an empowered and educated public, Milwaukee is on the right track in building healthier and more sustainable communities.
